Who is Mary Moves It? Your Questions Answered

I get lots of questions from people considering joining my Stay Active Longer classes. Here are the answers to help you decide if these classes are right for you.

Who are you, Mary?

I’ve been helping people stay active and independent across East Sussex since 2023. I trained with ‘Move it or Lose it’ in Birmingham, learning their research-based exercise program specifically designed for people with age-related conditions. I’ve also completed Parkinson’s UK training to better support class members with movement challenges, and I hold a psychology degree which helps me understand both the physical and mental aspects of staying active as we age.

The best part of what I do? Meeting incredible people week after week and watching them grow stronger and more confident. Every class feels like a little community gathering.

What does “NHS-approved exercises” actually mean?

Great question, and I completely understand why it matters.

When I say “NHS-approved,” I’m referring to the evidence-based exercise program I learned through ‘Move it or Lose it.’ This program is endorsed by the NHS because it’s specifically designed to be safe and beneficial for people with common age-related conditions such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Certain heart and lung conditions
  • Balance and mobility challenges

These aren’t just any exercises—they’re movements that have been researched and proven to help maintain strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health while being gentle on aging bodies. The key is that they can be adapted for different abilities and health conditions, which is why they’re considered safe for such a wide range of people.

Who comes to your classes?

My class members are wonderfully diverse! They range from people in their 50s to their 80s and beyond. Some come because they’re worried about their balance, others want to maintain their independence, and many join simply because they want to stay active in a friendly, non-judgmental environment.

I have regular members who manage conditions like early-stage Parkinson’s, arthritis, and various mobility challenges. Some arrive using walking aids, others drive themselves from miles away. What they all have in common is a desire to keep moving and stay connected with others who understand their journey.

Common concerns from new members:

  • “Will I be able to keep up?”
  • “Will I look silly?”
  • “Am I too old/unfit/stiff?”

The answer is always the same—you’ll fit right in, and you’ll move at exactly the right pace for you.

How can you help me?

The Four Pillars of Healthy Ageing

Every class focuses on four key areas that research shows are crucial:

Flexibility for mobility – keeping your joints moving freely for everyday activities like reaching, bending, and dressing

Aerobic health – supporting your heart and lung function through gentle movements that raise your heart rate safely

Strength – maintaining muscle mass for independence, good posture, and everyday tasks like climbing stairs or carrying shopping

Balance and stability – reducing fall risk and building confidence in your movement

Beyond Physical Fitness

My members often tell me the biggest difference isn’t just physical—it’s how they feel mentally. Physical activity, especially to music, releases all sorts of ‘happy hormones’, and moving with others creates a real sense of community and belonging. Many have made genuine friendships in class, improved their physical confidence, and look forward to our time together as the highlight of their week.

Adapted for Everyone

Whether you sit, stand, or mix it up—all bodies and abilities are welcome. I adapt every movement so everyone can participate safely at their own level. No judgment, no pressure, just gentle motivation and lots of encouragement.

Ready to give it a try?

If you’re curious but nervous, that’s completely normal! I’m always happy to have a chat about what to expect, or you can arrive a few minutes early to meet me before class starts.

Remember, the hardest part is often just walking through the door that first time. Once you do, you’ll discover a welcoming community of people who understand exactly how you’re feeling.

Any other questions?

Just ask! I love chatting about how movement can help you stay active longer.

“For both John and I, joining Stay Active Longer has been a very worthwhile move. The classes have restored my confidence in my ability to stay flexible and active. Mary’s friendly, professional, non-judgmental approach means everyone’s individual needs are met, which makes such a difference.

I’ve also loved the social side—laughing, chatting, and enjoying the company of others. The humour and choice of music are perfect too!”
